Frequently Asked Questions

Whipped Tallow

Is whipped tallow safe for sensitive skin?

Absolutely! Our whipped tallow is gentle and suitable for sensitive skin, including eczema-prone and dry skin types. Since our moisturizers contain 100% natural, high-quality ingredients, people with sensitive skin generally find they can use them without any issues.

What is whipped tallow used for?

Whipped tallow is a versatile moisturizer for both skin and hair. It hydrates deeply and helps repair dry or damaged skin. It is also great for eczema, psoriasis, cuts and scrapes, diaper rash, etc.

Can I use whipped tallow on my face?

Yes! It’s great for facial hydration and won’t clog pores. Our tallow and olive oil are the highest quality available to ensure they are not contaminated with anything that might contribute to the clogging of pores.

Will the whipped tallow make me smell like a hamburger?

Definitely not. When tallow is properly rendered and filtered, it retains very little, if any, scent. When combined with organic olive oil like ours is, the result is a moisturizer with a very neutral, clean scent that is extremely faint. No steak smell here!

How should I store the tallow and what is the shelf life?

Your tallow moisturizer should be stored at room temperature for the best consistency. It will be good for about 12-18 months, but we'll be surprised if you don't use it all before then!

My tallow is too firm. Is this normal and what can I do?

This is completely normal and can easily be changed. Our tallow balm is completely natural and unlike mainstream moisturizers, it does not contain any ingredients that will stabilize its consistency over a wide range of temperatures. This means that the texture and firmness of your tallow can vary greatly depending on its temperature. If your tallow is too hard, move it somewhere warmer in your house and check back after a few hours. It will get softer as it gets warmer.

Beeswax Candles

Why don't you use organic beeswax?

Short answer? It doesn't actually exist. That seems simplistic and not possibly true, but it is. The problem with beeswax is that bees can travel many miles as they forage for pollen. This means that a beekeeper can do everything right and use no chemicals whatsoever, but it's likely that the bees are still getting into flowers somewhere that is not the case. Because of this, the vast majority of "organic" beeswax gets imported from other countries, mainly China, where the standards are not enforced. There is a lot of fraud with this, and it is too difficult to avoid, so we instead source exclusively from farmers in the USA who we trust. This allows us to get the highest quality beeswax available to ensure that we can deliver candles that will burn cleanly and not pollute the air in your harm with toxic chemicals and synthetic fragrances.

Do you use silicon mold release when making your candles?

No. This is an industrial product and even though we would not have to say it is an ingredient in the candle, it would still get all over the outside surface of the candle and would be released into the air when the candle is burned. We can't prove that the chemicals in there are not toxic, and in fact, it's not even clear what all the ingredients are in such a product. Instead, we use coconut oil as a release for our candle molds. This is completely natural and guaranteed to be safe, whereas the silicon-based mold release is not.

Do you use any synthetic fragrances in your candles?

Absolutely not. Synthetic fragrances found in candles and skincare products are known to be extremely disruptive of the endocrine system, wreaking havoc on all of our hormones when exposed. This is because they are similar in chemical structure to certain hormones, like estrogen, and can bind the receptors of those hormones. This causes faulty signalling in the body which can lead to all sorts of negative down stream effects. The majority of our products are unscented for this reason. When we do scent something, such as our lip balm, we do so using essential oils.

My pillar candle is tunneling. How do I fix this?

Our pillar candles are designed to be dripless. This is done by sizing the wick such that it does not melt the wax all the way out to the edge. As the candle burns, the edges will soften. When you are done burning the candle, blow it out and carefully (caution: the wax may be very hot) press the top edges in towards the center. The next time you light your candle, this wax will melt. Repeat this process regularly and your candle will not drip and you will be able to enjoy as it uses all of its wax on the way down. Make sure you burn your candle for at least 1 hour at a time, otherwise it will be very difficult to avoid or correct tunneling.
